Dr. John Okemah is an enrolled member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma great-grandson of Oh Ke Ma and a member of the Raccoon Clan and Os Koo Sa society. His Kickapoo name is Ni Ka Paa. Dr. Okemah grew up in Puyallup. He attended WSU and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine via the INMED Program and has over 20 years of medical experience.
He comes to us from the Native American Health Center in Oakland, CA, where he served as Chief Medical Officer and oversaw clinic operations in Oakland, San Francisco, and eight school-based sites. Before that, he was the Medical Director with the Kickapoo Tribal Health Center.
Dr. Okemah is interested in developing systems, processes, and workflows to improve the quality of care for Natives. He believes in education, prevention, and holistic care of patients by treating the mind, body, spirit.
In his spare time, he likes to study Wing Chun (martial arts), does ultramarathons and mountain bikes. He embraces the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen –continuous daily improvement.
